St Brendan
Little is known with certainty about the Irish saint Brendan. He was born in Tralee in Kerry probably in 484ad. He was ordained priest by Bishop Erc.
He became a founder of monastries, the most famous being Clonfert in Galway.
The most spectacular event in Brendan's life was his expedition with sixty chosen companions, to discover the legendary "Island of the Blessed". They sailed the Atlantic ocean in two hide covered coracles. The monks came back with incredible tales of their adventures, their odyssey became one of the great Christian sagas all over Europe. In the ninth century this was written in a manuscript entitled "Navagatio Brendani" by an Irishman.
Brendan died in 577ad when he was over ninety. His feast day is 16th May.
